Basin Mountain
#9About Basin Mountain
Basin Mountain stands at 4,827 feet (1,471 m) and is the ninth highest peak in New York. Located in the Great Range, Basin is known for its distinctive steep summit cone and challenging terrain. The mountain offers spectacular views from its rocky summit, particularly of its neighbors in the Great Range and the surrounding High Peaks region. The most common approach to Basin is from the Garden trailhead in Keene Valley, often as part of a Great Range traverse. Its name derives from the large circular depression on its western slope, which resembles a basin.
History
Basin Mountain is part of the historic Great Range, one of the most spectacular mountain chains in the Northeast. The first recorded ascent of Basin was in the late 19th century by explorers mapping the Adirondack region. The mountain's geology features ancient Adirondack anorthosite, some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth. Basin was included on the original Adirondack 46 High Peaks list. Like many Adirondack peaks, Basin was affected by the 1950 hurricane that caused significant blowdown in the region, altering some of its forest cover and creating some of the slides visible today.
