Algonquin Peak
#2About Algonquin Peak
Algonquin Peak is the second highest mountain in New York State at 5,114 feet (1,559 m). Located in the MacIntyre Range, it offers a challenging climb and spectacular views. The summit is home to rare alpine vegetation, and on a clear day, the panoramic vista includes many of the other High Peaks, including Mount Marcy to the east. The peak is named after the Algonquin people, one of the indigenous tribes of the region.
History
Algonquin Peak was originally named McIntyre after Archibald McIntyre, one of the founders of the nearby Adirondack Iron Works. It was later renamed to honor the Algonquin people. The summit area contains a fragile alpine zone that represents less than 0.1% of New York State's land area. As a result, hikers are strongly encouraged to stay on the marked trail to protect the rare vegetation.
